[Vwdiesel] More Dasher?

Hi William:
Excessive smoke can indicate a tired engine burning oil or excess
fuel from the injection pump. I know you said the car sat for a long period.
If it didn't smoke when parked it shouldn't smoke now unless the rings are
stuck. Excessive smoke can be caused either by excess blow by or by excess
fuel. I believe if I was having this problem the first thing I would do is a
compression check. If your compression is down in the 300 + range in all
cylinders you probably have bad rings. This would cause hard starting even
in summer. If the compression check gives compression within specs than
I would get out my Bentley and follow it precisely while I set the injection
pump timing and the idle adjustment stop. If your idle is set wrong it
messes with the pump. I found this out while playing with the max fuel screw
on a turbo setup I was having trouble with. If the idle is set too low it
will restrict fuel so I believe if it is set to high it probably will
provide too much fuel. The max throttle screw is primarily a governor and I
don't think it bothers the pump. If someone has moved the max fuel screw
this can provide excess fuel and black smoke on acceleration. DON'T mess
with the max fuel screw until you have done all the pump settings to your
Bentleys specks. Even then remember where the setting was since this is a
setting that VW factory schools told the mechanics not to fool with.
Glow plugs should be matched to the glow plug relay. If you have
slow plugs with a fast relay or visa versa you won't be getting the proper
heat in the plugs to start the engine.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] More Dasher?
Took the Dasher for a test drive today. However, I find the following issues
or problems. 1)Smokes excessively under load, I think, i.e. climbing hills.
Would advancing or retarding the injection pump affect this? If so, please
tell me what to do & how to do it. I recall seeing comments re this before
but my mind needs refreshing. 2) when I turn the ignition switch on, the
radiator fan comes on. I don't think it should come on till the engine heats
up. Right? As I recall, I installed a new temperature switch that controls
this function. 3) I installed new glow plugs but they don't stay on long
enough. Car hard to start when cold. After letting it sit about 4 hours this
evening it didn't want to start. I think I replaced a relay but this was
around a year ago so memory not fresh.
All comments appreciated. Thank you.
