[Vwdiesel] Pan? splash guard? aerodynamic addition? What is itfor?

This is the case with most of these type of pans. If you want to use one and 
not have it be a burden, I'd suggest making your own. You can use aluminum 
or fiberglass. As for smoothing the underside, yes, it will help. But, the 
primary function of them was for sound deadening.
