most likely a 6v71- same motor as an inline 671, just in a V. I have a
6v in the clark-michigan loader, and a straight 6 in the antique grader
(which I have to go clear roads with now, they are over a foot deep, and
drifts over the bumper)
The straight six is smoother, the V noisier- when I use the loader, they
can hear it from 3 miles away... and it has a huge muffler for each side
too.
I guess it depends on how much you intend to use the bus, and for what
purposes. Infrequent use, the detroit is a good option. For a live in
it for a year kind of holiday, no way would I use a road oiler- better
mileage from the 466 and less noise.
I met the local school division bus repair guy. He wouldn't walk across
the street to set fire to a powerstorke. They had much better service
out of fuel injected big block gas jobs, and I believe that.
I pick the kids up from school twice a week for swimming and piano
lessons, and walk past the running fleet of school busses waiting for
the kids to board... the powerstrokes are all dead now, replaced with
small cat powered units. Last powersmoke still inservice was last year,
driven by retired farmer/truck driver. The school bus drivers of the
female persuasion killed off the powersmokes in a month and were put
back on a gas job.
It was neat, I could walk past a powerstroke powered bus as they all sat
there idling, and pick out the ones that were getting ready to pop, and
sure enough, the bus would be different a week or so. I speculate that
the valvetraiin was the weak area, as that was the main noise I heard
that precluded their demise.
I know onw guy that actually uses his 24v cummins as a work vehicle- has
a hot shot service for hurry up deliveries and stuff, from truck box to
30 foot gooseneck trailer. He's gone through 2 pistons in it. Seems
that under severe load over a long period, they can eat themselves up at
some point in stock trim. The 466dt can pull it's guts out all day and
not melt that I know.
