[Vwdiesel] Instrument Panel Bezel Removal

I have a 1982 Diesel Caddy Pickup and I'm trying to remove the 
Instrument Cluster Bezel.
I have the radio out and the headlamp switch knob removed. I can't get 
the bezel past the Cold Start Knob on the Cold Start Cable.
The Bentley Manual says to remove the knob, but it doesn't unscrew. 
Anybody out there have a solution?
I need to remove this to gain access to some botched wiring near the heater.
