[Vwdiesel] Compression Test Results :-(

Yesterday afternoon I replaced the injectors on my '84 Rabbit. While
at it, I decided to check the compression on the engine. I've never
checked the compression on it before (owned it for about 1 1/2 years).
I finally decided to check it, partly because I was suspecting some
problems and was tired of keeping myself purposefully in the dark. ;-)

So, I did the compression on a warm engine. Sure enough, the results
are not very good: 255-435-400-160. I then added about a tablespoon
of oil in cylinders 1 and 4. With the oil added, they tested at 460
and 545, respectively.

So my question is this, is this almost definitely worn/broken rings?
Is there any chance this kind of result could point to mal-adjusted
valves?

For what its worth, the car seems to run great. I average about 40mpg
in town and around 45mpg on the highway. There is almost 0 noticeable
smoke out the exhaust, unless I'm doing hard acceleration (if there is
any smoke -- I don't see it in the rear-view mirror). I've not had
any problems starting the car in the winter -- but I do make ample use
of the block heater during cold months. My cooling system seems to
work fine. There seems to be no oil in the coolant (or vice-versa)
and the head gasket was replaced a little over a year ago. But I do
burn quite a bit of oil -- about a quart every 1000 miles.

Thanks for any and all input,
