Bryan,
A. Continue to drive like as is. One qt to a thousand miles isn't that bad I
know of a lot of others that it is much worse and drive their vehicles
adding a qt to every other tank of fuel.
B. You can take the head off, pull the pistons, measure cylinders (to make
sure they are not to far out of limits) and install new rings.
C. Try running an Auto-Rx treatment and see what happens. This product is
one that works. I have used it on my gassers and my oil analysis all
improved after cleaning up the inside of my engines. You don't really have
much to loose other than the cost of the Auto-Rx two oil filters and two oil
changes. It would be interesting to see what kind of improvement you would
get after a cleaning phase. http://www.auto-rx.com/

Yesterday afternoon I replaced the injectors on my '84 Rabbit. While
at it, I decided to check the compression on the engine. I've never
checked the compression on it before (owned it for about 1 1/2 years).
I finally decided to check it, partly because I was suspecting some
problems and was tired of keeping myself purposefully in the dark. ;-)
So, I did the compression on a warm engine. Sure enough, the results
are not very good: 255-435-400-160. I then added about a tablespoon
of oil in cylinders 1 and 4. With the oil added, they tested at 460
and 545, respectively.
So my question is this, is this almost definitely worn/broken rings?
Is there any chance this kind of result could point to mal-adjusted
valves?
For what its worth, the car seems to run great. I average about 40mpg
in town and around 45mpg on the highway. There is almost 0 noticeable
smoke out the exhaust, unless I'm doing hard acceleration (if there is
any smoke -- I don't see it in the rear-view mirror). I've not had
any problems starting the car in the winter -- but I do make ample use
of the block heater during cold months. My cooling system seems to
work fine. There seems to be no oil in the coolant (or vice-versa)
and the head gasket was replaced a little over a year ago. But I do
burn quite a bit of oil -- about a quart every 1000 miles.
Thanks for any and all input,
Bryan Walton
