Maybe, but a simpler explanation is that people expect small cars to cost
less... in reality, there's very little about a small car that costs less to
make than a full size car or even a pickup.  The actual difference in
material costs of a small car and an SUV are very small, labor for each will
not be substantially different.  

So as a car company, given that production costs are not appreciably
different, would you rather make and market small cars that people expect to
pay very little for, or make SUV's that people expect to pay a lot for?
