I experienced this on a Peugeot 504 some years ago, and a few weeks  
after the cable started sticking, one day it broke. Could have been  
very inconvenient, even dangerous, if it had happened at a different  
time and place. If it were my Vanagon, I'd replace the cable ASAP.
