You can set it exactly as if you would set the older pumps David.
It gets the pump in the correct range almost every time that way.  The 
electronics don't get to alter the delivery timing, that you still set, 
and is fairly critical, just you can check it with vag-com to see if it 
is in the right spot or not.

you can use just the pin, and check it trial and error fashion if you 
like, at least you can see the results... but the dial indicator is 
usually spot on the first time.
