[Vwdiesel] Glow Plug Cycle WAS: Analyzing compression numbers -oil in in...

Hi Folks;
My VW diesel experience is with Rabbit and Dasher 1.5, 1.6, and 1.6
turbo diesel. First off let me state that I believe that everything you can
take of the puny key switch is a plus. On the VW glow plug circuit you can
have problems with the switch, the relay, the fuse etc. I always build a new
glow plug circuit. I go straight from the glow plug buss bar to a Ford
starter relay then to the battery. I activate the relay with an aftermarket
starter button. I go from the battery to the starter button and then to the
center post to activate the relay. You really don't need to use the separate
wire from the battery to the starter relay. You could use any constant hot
you find under the dash. By using good heavy wire from the battery to the
solenoid and on to the glow plugs you assure full battery power to the
plugs. To use the plugs to start a cold engine just hold in the starter
button and count. If you have fast plugs you probably will want to count to
about 8 if slow plugs probably closer to twenty. It only takes a few tries
to find out what works.

Realize that the "older" glow plug relay cycle was MUCH
longer since those were "slow glow" compared to the
"fast glow" plugs that superceeded them eventually.
The pickup's relay is acting up (likely a marginal sensor or
a weak ground somewhere). I just keep it half unplugged.
In the mornings I just lean forward, plug it in for a few seconds,
pull it back halfway out, start and go. No problems or rough
running. Doesn't take all that long of a glow, no afterglow, just
a little pre-heat. :-)
