[Vwdiesel] A3 Jetta: IDI or TDI engine?

I am planning on replacing my existing 91 Jetta TD with an A3.

Choices are the 1.9L IDI engine (93-96?) and TDI (97-98).

I lean towards the IDI because of it's many years of development and relative simplicity, but would also like to get into a TDI because of it's increased sophistication and performance.

Does anyone in the group have an opinion (now, that's a loaded question!!!)
