Key word is how much energy YOU put into it. The potential
has been raised by previous processes. Happens quite a bit but
energy in still = energy out unless you're on the subatomic scale
and even then if you do your E=MC2 then it still calculates out.
"Someone else" raised the potential for you.
Burn your peanut oil but the plant put a lot of energy into it,
do your fusion but you're turning mater into energy and burn your
carbon but generally a plant converted a LOT of photons and
CO2 into that carbon first.
Roll a rock down a hill. Lots of energy, sure it doesn't take
necessarily a lot of energy to release it but think what it took
to place that rock where the potential energy was greater than
the energy it took to move it. Then gravity does the work.
It's just all in how easily we can harnes the work "someone
else" has already done for us. :-)
