I don't know the answer to your problem, but when I had the timing way off
on mine it was either white or very light smoke coming out the tailpipe.
Thick black I don't know about in that case. Though
this<http://www.dieselinjection.net/GARY/index.html>page says it could
be timing.
This <http://www.aa1car.com/library/diesel.htm> page says to first check for
an air supply restriction. That sounds like a good idea to me. It also talks
about timing being a possibility. I found them through this
