Yes, the only special timing tool I have is the adapter for the back of the
pump. You can make do with a magnetic base and a dial indicator, but it's a
pain and I got it as a gift from my ex- brother-in-law who was a VW mechanic
and could get it for $8 or so.
I've never bothered with the injection pump holder cause it's so easy to
just get it perfect with the dial gauge.
One time I didn't replace the tensioner because it felt and looked fine. It
didn't last more than a hundred miles or so before it froze and broke the
belt and then the head had to be rebuilt.
