IIRC, this was Car&Driver's annual "Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea" 
non-stop race.  Most entries were high-perf vehicles.
Being better looking and more intelligent than average, some VW diesel 
enthusiasts used the tortoise approach to go against the hares...
