Is the York that bad? Yes, yes, yes! It ways more, takes up more space, consumes more power, & adds to engine vibration. I had a York as OEM on my 1972 Citroen stationwagon. When it died, I replaced it with a Sankyo. I don't think the Sankyo came out till the late '70s or early '80s so prior to that, aftermarket A/Cs had to use the York. In the late '50s there was a 2 piston pump which was even heavier. It might have been a Chrysler Airtemp, not sure. It came off my 1956 Packard Patrician which is now for sale. Why they didn't use the GM rotary compressor, I don't know. I am a car collector, many different makes. I have a 1965 Olds F-85 with factory air which still works fine. I have had the Olds in my collection since 1986.
