[Vwdiesel] More Quantum questions?

First an update on what I have done. I have installed 5 new gages & all are now working: volt meter, pyrometer, boost gage, oil pressure gage, & electric temperature gage with the sender in the hose leading from the expansion/fill tank to the engine. Have installed a two position switch so I can manually turn on one or both radiator fans. Took it to my mechanic who is working on some of my other cars & he diagnosed it as having a blown head gasket, which I have suspected as the Quantum still overheats despite both radiator fans running. I want to do all the work on my VW diesels myself.
I have R&R'd the head on my '81 Dasher diesel which does not have a turbo. The Quantum does have a turbo. Do I have to remove the turbo before removing the exhaust manifold? The Dasher has an inspection hole on top of the flywheel so you can turn the engine to TDC but I don't see one on the Quantum. Is there one there? I have the tools to lock the cam shaft & injection pump in place, for the Dasher at least. I assume they will work for the Quantum. Correct? How do I lock the engine at TDC? Same as the Dasher or different procedure? While I am at it, I want to change the timing belt as I suspect the prior owner neglected changing it although he claimed he had it done.
The red warning lite in the stock water temperature blinks constantly, whether the engine is cold or hot although this temperature gage otherwise appears to function correctly. How do I fix it to function correctly?
My Quantum appears to handle nicely, as nice as my Focus ZX3 & with as much snap too. I think I agree with Brian Decker about running the Dasher & Quantum instead of buying a new Prius or TDI. However buying a new one is out of the question unless I can sell a couple of my collector cars, which do not depreciate. I bought my 2001 Focus ZX3 new for only $11,643 including tax & license, half of the cost of a then new Prius or TDI. With 114,000 miles on it, it is still running dependably & so far, has been the most trouble free car I have ever owned. Only complaint is its gas mileage STINKS! (24 to 28 MPG & an occasional 30 MPG).
I have some outside work to do so the Quantum will have to remain parked in the garage while the good weather holds.
Brian Decker, could you email me your phone number & when it would be convenient to call? I have phone service which allows free long distance calling within the USA.
