[Vwdiesel] do I need cold start

  Odds are you'll have difficult starting and rough running for the first 
minute or so without it.  When properly timed, below about 30F, they 
tend to start much harder without it and pretty well won't idle unless 
you hold the throttle for a minute or so.
  On the plus side, until you get around to replacing your cable, you 
can simply take a screwdriver and push the lever toward the back 
of the pump and just leave it in the advanced position.  I tend to 
just leave mine out during cold weather or else I always tend to 
forget to pull it out.  It simply advances the initial timing so it 
doesn't influence the timing out on the road.
