Unlike the MGB-V8, we DID get the TR8. Both used the ubiquitous Rover 3.5 (Buick 215). Of course, they had to put some idiotic SU carbs on top, and both the MG and TR being ox-cart suspensions, they didn't work all that well, but they WERE really neat cars none-the-less. I have a '76 B roadster (all MGB from mid '74 on have the correct firewall to fit the V8) with that in mind, but it occurred to me that the engine (I have the Olds block and 300CID alumunim Buick heads with very large valves) would be much more at home in my Miata. Just have to make enough money to buy a 230SLK for my youngest girl to get her out of the MX5. What's a father to do.......
Getting back to the original topic: Why bother adapting a TDI to a front engine, rear drive arrangement? It makes so much more sense to install it in the rear of a genuine mid-engined chasis and use the appropriate VW transverse 6 speed gearbox. While the X1-9 may look neat, it is an orphan of monumental proportions even before making it into a mongrel. Better off to look at the first gen Toyota MR2 if you want to use a production-based car.
