[Vwdiesel] M Benz 300D ?

I can't believe some of the stuff I'm hearing here about Benz diesels.
I owned a 300D so I can speak from experience. 1985 is the final year
of the 3.0 5-cylinder iron-head engine. It is probably the most durable
engine ever to be put into a Mercedes diesel sedan. The injection pumps
are bullet-proof - I should know, I ran one on straight vegetable oil
for over 20,000 miles and had ZERO problems (except more frequent fuel
filter changes). This was on an engine with over 200,000 miles on the
clock. Every VW injection pump I have seen that had WVO or biodiesel
run through it developed a leak in short order - not the Benz. They are
tough, and parts are plentiful and relatively cheap since there are so
many still on the road (here in Dallas, for every older VW diesel I see
on the road, there are 20 Benz diesels of similar vintage). The
injection pumps are relatively simple and cost about the same as a VW
injection pump. Back in those years, about half of the Mercedes sedans
sold in the US were diesels. A decent 1985 turbo diesel sedan with a
bum turbo would be a bargain for $500. As with any car, the way it was
cared for by its previous owners is very important. If the car was well
cared for, 300,000 miles is nothing to be scared of. With a big engine
in a heavy car, it is not going to get the mileage that a 1.6 VW diesel
will. They average around 25mpg and can approach 30 on the highway if
driven gently. But you get something in return for the extra fuel - a
car that weighs 60% more, has more room inside and will protect you
better in a crash. If fuel economy is not your top priority, the Benz
is worth a look.

I have not called the party or looked at the car. Just wondering what the price of a new or rebuild turbo would be? How much work would be involved for a DIY shade tree mechanic to replace the turbo? Would it be cheaper, & practical to find a non turbo exhaust manifold & install? No price was listed, only best offer, but wondering whether to offer $200 or even take it for free, which sometimes happens? It's not a VW but I know some of you know about Mercedes diesels too.
