Many many VW aircooled engines see use in experimental and homebuit 
aircraft.  Small modification for a thrust bearing, better is to have a 
gearbox or belt drive speed reduction to get the engine rpm to where it 
makes power and swing a bigger prop, and it's a safe, reliable powerplant.

A local guy still has a Pietenpol single seater with a model T boat 
anchor pulling it along.

I don't think the guy is claiming it is a Taylorcraft, but claims it to 
be a Taylor aircraft.  There's a subtle difference. :-)  I still hunger 
after a BD-12 Talyorcraft...  Faster than a speeding Cub.
