If it's the older 12mm bolt I reuse it, if the later 14mm I always buy a new
one from the Dealer. I haven't been able to find one anywhere else.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Crankshaft timing sprocket bolt
What kind of experience have people had with this? I've had one break and
cause problems with the keyway on the crank and sprocket.
I have an engine I'm putting back together for a car I plan to sell and I'm
having a dilemma. I want to do it right, but don't want to go too far out of
my way. I talked to Halsey Import and they tell me that the bolt is not
available and that they don't change them when they do work. They also
claimed that it was unnecessary. My Bentley manual says to always replace
it. I'd rather avoid the dealer and their prices, but I can check with them
if necessary.
Has anyone else had any experiences with either reusing the bolt or getting
a hold of a new one somewhere?
Thanks!
Erik
