[Vwdiesel] New head installed 91 ECO

Well, not sure who all know about my oil pressure issue that I have had in
my 91 ECO now TD jetta. I basically had ZERO pressure once the engine warmed
up. This was taking pressure from the head with a good known mechanical
pressure gage. Well I got the new head on, I have one issue and I'm hoping
it will be an easy fix. Anyway I got it running today with the new head on
it and I had 40psi at cold start up from the head pressure port and when it
reached operating temp it was down to 19 psi. It had never gotten about
18psi before when cold and ZERO when warm but now I have 19psi at operating
temp. So it looks like that head is a bad casting. When I pulled it I had
the head gasket on correctly so that wasn't the issue, obviously it is
inside the head. Sure was nice to see that pressure. This is also running
15w-40 oil. I plan on changing the oil out tomorrow, just wanted to make
sure all was well before I did change it out.

Now the issue I have is I have a really loud pinning/diesel sound. Almost
like valves hitting piston. I did turn the engine over by hand several times
and didn't feel anything. It was all aligned, TDC with cam plate and IP plug
in gear. I then turned it over several times by hand and then set it back to
TDC and set the timing with the gage in the IP to 1mm maybe a little more or
if you went by my gage it was .040. I ran that several times to make sure
it was set after I tightened down the pump mount bolts and it didn't move.
I'm hoping that the heavy pinging is just way to much timing and not actual
pistons hitting. Like I said I didn't feel anything when turning it over by
hand.

Tomorrow I'm going to go back and recheck all my timing with the cam plate
and IP plug and TDC since it has ran some, then I'm going to loosen the pump
and move it ever so slightly to see what happens. Just want to make sure
that pulling the IP away from the head retards the timing correct? Because
when I was setting it to advance it on the dial I moved it in toward the
head.

Thanks,

Nick
