If we assume all else is good then try two things. Listen to the
pinging as you pull/push the timing advance cold and warmed up
a couple minutes. (checking for timing caused noise.) Loosen each
injector line one at a time for a couple seconds each and see if
the noise goes away (checking for which cylinder causing it, if
just one.)
Valves lightly hitting pistons is more of a clacking, clatter,
noise. Not so much a diesel sound.
Hopefully you just got some crud in an injector and it's shooting
badly, causing the excessive noise. If you set the timing with the
lever out then it'd be retarded and should be quieter and not run
very strongly.
I think rotating the pump toward the head advances it. The
gauge should rotate to a higher number as you turn to advanced.
