[Vwdiesel] '98 tdi advice

after the recent demise of the '80 audi diesel, i'm in the market for a new
diesel.
I've got my eye on 97-'98 vw tdi's, jetta to be exact. I'm looking for some
advice or caveats for these cars/engines. the last 5 or 6 years i've been
driving 80's mercedes and the audi diesel, and this would be my most
'sophisticated' diesel yet. There is a dealership in bellingham (nice
cars) that seems to get a good number of these cars, then they do the
timing belts, brakes, timing, and some other maintenance, then sell them for
$8000. I went up and looked at one this week. it seemed to be in pretty
good shape, the interior had been smoked in, the body was in nice, but not
excellent shape, and it drove well. I noticed some oil residue on the turbo
intake, but wasn't totally sure what i was looking at.

Anyway, any problem points i should check for, or advice the list could give
for a TDI newbie?
