I recall clamping my old strut housing in a vise, down at the base and not tight enough to 
crush it, just enough to hold it still.  Then soaking the top threads w/ a good 
penetrating oil and some propane torch heat applied, I think I used either a pipe wrench 
or channel-lock pliers on the top.
