Diesel hit $3.99 here, 120 miles south of Chicago, over the weekend.
A number of factors are at work. As usual, the *lack* of refining capacity,
or the lack of modernized refining capacity is part of the problem. Part is
attributed to the added cost of refining ULSD. It's also still winter, so
part of the bunker oil that could further be refined to #1 heating or #2
Diesel is being allocated to #1 heating oil.
By far, though, the major contributing factors are the continued
decline of the dollar against more sound currencies, well-founded fear in
the futures markets that any of several major oil exporters could denominate
oil in euros rather than dollars, continued antagonism between the Current
Occupant and various oil producing nations and the cartel, and record oil
company profits.

I was just up in Chicago and saw prices of 3.999/gal. That was 80 cents
higher than gas. Anyone know what's going on? Barring that, anyone know
where to buy sodium hydroxide for some bioDiesel? Even then, the last deli
I talked to said that they no longer had to pay for grease hauling. Sounds
like even the economics of that are shifting away from our favour.
