[Vwdiesel] smoking audi diagnosis

An exhaust guide won't affect starting, unless it's so bad it won't let 
the valve shut.  It may leak oil, let smoke back into the engine but not 
hamper starting.  Starting is timing, compression, glow plugs, 
injectors.  From your description I would tackle valve set and injectors 
first, at the same time even, then it's easier to turn over to do the 
valve set.

Good motor or bad motor, you can always use a good set of injectors on 
the next one to come along, so no real loss.
