[Vwdiesel] timing tool and parts advice needed

I would recommend welding the pan.  I've repaired lots of
oil pans and transmissions.  aluminum and steel.  I've
repaired the aluminum vanagon pans for 1.6NA.  
Even if there is cracking on the flange part of the pan.

The steel pans are easy to fix, should only be a 15 min.
job.  if you can get access to a TIG welder or 
If you know a decent welder then by all means the aluminum
pans are also worth repairing.  

Put it in a
parts washer for a day, and then use a stainless wire wheel.
Run just a tig torch without filler a few times and keep
wire wheeling to "sweat" out the oil in the aluminum and
then seal it with lots of filler from both sides if possible
and don't grind it flush, leave the weld deposit as is, to
avoid future cracking around the weld.
