A few months ago, in my 85 Jetta TD, the head gasket began leaking
compression gasses into the coolant, resulting in massive overheating of
coolant and disastrous blow-out of aging rubber coolant hoses and fittings.

I asked the list for input, and one of the replies was a suggestion to
re-torque the head bolts before going to more expensive measures such as
taking off the head and replacing the head gasket.

That advice worked. Two head bolts were below torque specs. Tightening
them stopped the compression leak. Replacing the hoses and coolant solved
the other side of the problem.

A virus wiped my email out box this week, and I have no record of who
supplied that very useful advice, but I greatly appreciate the help. Thank
you.
