[Vwdiesel] New York Times article on '09 Jetta TDI...

Remember, the engine in the Jetta is much bigger (2.0l 140 hp?) and the
current A5 design is as big and as heavy as the 90's B4 Passat so mileage is
lower just because of those factors. Our older diesels are lighter, smaller
and have much smaller engines. Also VW didn't like the EPA mileage and had
the car tested at a different facility and they found that they got 3-4
miles per gallon better than the EPA test cycle. There has been a big
discussion of this over on the TDIclub site. BTW if it wasn't for the
common rail injection system, fuel economy would have been much worse and
they would never be able to meet emission standards. Unfortunately VW says
B5 (biodiesel) only for these new engines. Not a very green option but
apparently due to the emission system. There are a few guys on the TDIclub
that are testing B100 in an 09 to see if there are problems. So far,
biggest problem seems to be oil dilution by fuel bypass. One reported an
increase of almost a quart in one oil change cycle. No one is sure the
cause of this yet but it may be due to bypassing of the rings during the
break-in period. Some antidotal evidence is that biodiesel is actually
better for the after burn catalyst emission system but no specific data yet.

Thanks Mark for the link, great artical. I remember reading an artical
similar to this in 2003 on the A4 TDI.
I am confussed, this is the second time I have seen this VERY low MPG stats,
are they talking about the TDI or Gas I wonder.

"
The Jetta is frugal in the middle years, with a rating of 30 miles a gallon
in town and 41 on the highway. The tiny two-seat Smart is the only nonhybrid
car that can match the 41 m.p.g. rating.
"
Humm, these cars get solid 46-50 all the time, all day long? Not sure what
that is all about.

Wow, with the $1,300 Alt. fuel credit, which must be geared towards Bio
Diesel, yes? I want one of these new ones in maybe 2 years.
But, that means I may have to part with some other car unless the wife will
sell her gasser Vibe, which gets 34-35, not bad for a jap car wrapped by
some Pontiac deal. It is a Toyota.
