I just got my second leaks on the pickup pump so I gave up and
took it in for a rebuild. It cost just over $400. They went ahead
and did a full rebuild on it. Not too bad considering that's what it
cost me on my Rabbit, about 15 years ago and you only do it once
every couple hundred thousand miles, depending on use, fuel, etc.

Exhaust leaks aren't bad on the diesels. A little Kroil or at least
PB Blaster on the nuts before you pull them.. You have to pull the
turbo first, to get at all the nuts. Pull the in and out lines, 4 bolts
to the manifold, then the exhaust downpipe and 8 nuts from the
head. You may have to pull the 6 intake manifold bolts and pull
both manifolds together. The bolt that holds the two together is
often rusted and hard to get at as well.
They don't tend to get hot and warp like on the gassers. The studs
and nuts don't tend to strip and stick like on a gasser either. :-)
