It could either be the valves in teh rack or the pump itself. I'd start by
flushing the system and putting in some new (correct spec) fluid, and see
where that gets you. You may just ahve some dirt or something getting stuck
in there.

Hi all, I think most of our cars have been running well because we have been
quite.
So, this is what is going on with the Jetta TD now. I put a new PS pump on
this car back in Jan, 08. I paid someone to do the swap and it was not
aligned just right so the belt was jumping off. It was winter and I just
left if, the car is not that bad without PS.
So, last month I finally get the pump aligned correctly and the belt stays
on now, no issue. All seemed to be working OK, but did seem as if I needed
to bleed the system, PS was jerky at times. As time went on, not PS does no
work much at all when the car is cold but then works fine in a few minutes.
It seems to work OK above 5-10 miles an hour in a parking lot, but when
sitting still PS does not work and something is making noise when turning
the wheel and doing a circle in the parking lot or going slow around a turn.
So, either I have to somehow bleed the rack or the rack is shot. I do not
see anything dripping out of the rack.
Would driving the car for 6 months with no PS hooked up kill the rack?
The rack is most likely original, now the car has over 200K on it.
What do you all think.
Thanks
