[Vwdiesel] More Quantum Questions?

I had an '85 Quantum TD. Still regret to this day letting her go! It had
180Kmi on it and never had a heating issue. But I digress,

My favorite story about my car is one vacation from San Diego to
Pocotello, Idaho. Took I-15 all the way. Passing 95% of all the vehicles
going up and over the San Gabriel mountains out side of Los Angeles was
awesome. I was only limited by EGT, which I had to massage by foot to
keep it below 1250*. My Temp gauge never wavered from center. This is
with my family of four, and a trunk full of stuff.

My point is, there is something else going on. Your radiator switches
don't matter when you are travelling at speed. There are two pulley
sizes for these diesels. If I remember correctly, mine had a smallish
pulley on my water pump. Faster waterpump speed.

If I remember correctly, my radiator was a two-pass. Make sure the end
tank with the hoses has the divider in it.

Make sure your radiator hoses, lower especially, are NOT collapsing at
higher engine speeds. It can happen. Make sure you have the correct
thermostat installed. That is, one with the by-pass diverter plate. I
have seen many a VW with plain-ole thermostats installed that didn't
have the bypass diverter plate. I'm not trying to knock your mechanical
skills by any means here. Just dotting the "i's".

As to the overheating, I am beginning to think it may be the temperature fan switch which is supposed to turn the left fan on at low speed at 190 F & both fans on at high speed when the temperature reaches 205 F. I can probably figure out how to check out the system but any suggestions from you readers might help me save some time. Since this Quantum is 26 years old, some of the OEM parts are probably failing due to age & the 117,000 miles on the car. I drove the car on Sat., 8/30 & it did not heat up. The prior owner complained the car would overheat in hot weather when climbing mountain grades. The radiator does not show any signs of a head gasket leak as the testing fluid stayed blue. Also, the coolant return into the coolant recovery tank is steady. Am thinking of installing a manual toggle switch to bypass the switch & turn on both radiator fans on high when needed. Is this radiator coolant temper
ature switch easy or hard to find? Haven't checked locally yet.
