I thought I had marked some resources in Diesel Power about custom swaps, but haven't found it in my stack by the bed.  That's what got me thinking about the old MB engine in the garage.  On the other hand, I did find an article about Checker Cab companys diesel, and a Studebaker diesel.  I couldn't find the articles online, but I can scan and send them to anyone interested.
