Been there.
I had a car (bought new) which was the same...no timing mark. I ended
up marking it with a cold chisel. I pulled #1 injector, and fed a
section of 14 ga copper wire in, and rotated the engine until
#1 was at TDC, and then checked for the "pin" alignment on the
IP (to make sure that I was not 180 off).
That flywheel never had any timing mark on it. It did have a tab,
which I presume is for a sensor in some application...but not mine.
It was a 1980, 1.5, I believe.
This may not be what you want to hear...just my experience. I have not
had a VW since then, or before then missing a timing mark.
