  Wow, I've had the exhaust separate on the Dasher (BAE turbo) 
and on the pickup (stock Jetta TD). Both were quite loud if you 
stepped on the throttle.  The pickup had the coolest, audible 
turbo whine though!  It was wasn't much louder if you drove like there 
was a soft tomato on the accelerator pedal.
