58 here.
I guess this thread is ok to go off diesel a little bit. My first VW was
a family owned car - my older brother bought a 65 bug brand new for 1795
and sold it to a younger brother in 75. I bought it from him in 76 and
toured the country in it, ended up in NC (started out in CA).
My first diesel was a Toyota PU truck - oops, I left out the 'totally
clapped out' part in that description. At the time, my brother worked
for Grant, as in the piston ring people. I got a new set of piston
rings for it, didn't make a bit of difference. I think the oil had
never been changed in that truck, it had 170K on it when I got it, had
obviously been seized at some point in it's life (no, I didn't replace
any pistons) I sold it to some guy who needed the crankshaft.
Then I bought a 84 Olds with the 4.3 litre diesel in it - it was a real
dog, but it got about 23 mpg around town, so it was a keeper. Then, a
couple years later I bought an 83, as a parts car, it hadn't been run in
a few years. When I finally started it up a couple of years later, it
ran like a scalded dog - man, that sucker could pull...unfortunately, I
didn't keep the anti-freeze up to date and one winter morning when I
went out to start it it barfed up some aluminum chunks.
Then I bought a VW diesel, that was a couple years ago, I still like it!
