I had a '70 Type III Squareback, and that was fuel injected. (and lost it's
electronic mind on more than one occasion) Since this tractor has carbs,
and claims to be 1600cc's, it has to be a Type III engine. The bus didn't
use a pancake engine until 1972, and that engine came out of the Type 4
(411/412) which to the best of my knowledge was never carbureted for the
North American market.

The Type 4 engine was also used in the Vanagon and the Porche 914, again
fuel injected.

I've always felt one of VW's biggest mistakes was marketing the 914 as a
Porche in the US. If they would have sold it as a VW (as was done in
Europe) they would have had a real winner. How could a mid-engined "New
Ghia" not have been a winner?
Joe
PS - that tractor is INSANE!!! Almost makes me want to get into lawnmower
racing...

The VW 'pancake' engines were originally used in the fastback and
squareback. They are 1600 cc's and were rated at 57 HP. If the twin cards
are Solex, then more than likely, the engine is out of a 67', because after
that they used fuel injection. The one unique thing to remember is that,
although the firing order is the same 1-4-3-2, number 1 plug wire is where
number 3 would be on the upright engines. That was done because of the
configuration that was presented when installed in the vehicle. Other than
the sheet metal, and the aforementioned item, they are the same engine as a
beetle. What is the letter designation on the block?

Couple questions. I know nothing on air cooled gas VW engines. My father
just bought a JD 140 Lawn tractor with a VW bus engine in it. My father
always does write-ups on all the things we own in our tractor collection and
he was wanting some info on this engine. What years would it have been made,
what would the size be HP and cc (ex. 1600 cc). It has a mild cam in it and
dual carburetors. Any help would be appreciated. This is the link on ebay
and there is a youtube video of it running. The guy that put this in died a
few years ago and the seller doesn't know much about it.
