[Vwdiesel] Clutch Thumping

My first thought was CV joint, or something hitting the shaft. Thwap
thwap thwap.

Clutch seems to work fine, no shudder, no slip. I can feel the sound in
the car easily. Not a grind or a whine.

Sound seems to be coming from the middle under the engine.

Goes away when the clutch is depressed.

Seems like inner CV joints wouldn't be affected but clutch being
depresses.

Thump gets quieter and is silent at higher speeds, but is significant at
lower speeds.

At idle the shuffley?? sound is gone though (sounded like something was
loose rather than a grind or whine). I'm not sure how the clutch goes
together, but I'm wondering if there is something in there, or a bad
bearing or spring? I was wondering if a spring could be hitting
something, and then get pushed out of the way at higher speeds? - I've
never had it apart so I'm not sure what to imagine.

Thanks,

Will.
