Top gear is a top program, and it has been going over here since the 80's,
although in my opinion it is now at it's all time best. The special
episodes, that usually involve some epic adventure across far away lands in
clapped-out old bangers are top quality entertainment.
I seem to remember when the Lupo (the one that looked like half a car!) TDI
was launched over here, that some testers managed well over 70mpg - and
those were standard cars with the 1.4 , 75 hp TDI engine. We don't have the
Lupo any more, it is now the Brazilian built Fox, which looks a more like a
real car, although sadly, I've heard bits fall off them.
There are scrap yards full of diesels (mainly Citroens!) over here and the
Ford Focus is becoming more of a common site, so I think you could get one
fairly cheap. The first TD 1.8 engines that were in loads of other Fords are
10 a penny. The later TDCI Common-rail engines are rarer, but not unheard
of.
Iain.
