[Vwdiesel] Big Problems with Engine (I think)

  If the smoke's out the tail rather than from under the hood, with 
a few things James mentioned I'd guess the cap was loose, came 
off, oil got on things, timing belt slipped a tooth.  Mine did the 
jumped tooth once, lost power, smoke out the back, whitish, luckily 
just one tooth didn't bend any valves as I recall.  As James said,
