That's correct, no dial indicator needed. You do need Vag-Com to set
the timing correctly. If it is too far out it can't compensate.
Try grabbing the IP and see if you can get it to move around at all,
maybe the bolts loosened up. There are a couple on the sprocket end
and one at the injection line end.
Flashing glow plug - stupid sounding question, but do the brake
lights work? I don't think that would prevent it from starting,
though. If both brake lights are bunt out or the brake light switch is
bad that will cause a flashing glow plug light, at least on the A4s.
