Got the head off. Used air wrench to get the 4 bolts attaching exhaust manifold to turbo. Found from turbo to left side of engine but does not enter the head found a hold down bracket attached to the removable water outlet on rear of head. (This may answer the question another had about this oil line) Checked torque to remove the head bolts. The left front (drivers side) took only 60 psi to loosen. Several took 80 psi & at least 3 took 120 psi to loosen. Kept notes as to which bolt took how much torque. Then stripped the head of the exhaust manifold & both water outlets, glow plugs & injectors to take head to machine shop. I have a professional straight edge & found a 2000th of an inch feeler gage under the straight edge but not a 5000th of an inch feeler gage would not go anywhere under the straight edge. . Didn't try the 4000th of an inch feeler gage. The head had the usual small cracks between the exhaust ports.

The local machine shop wants $60 to true or surface the head, $60 to pressure test & about $300 to do a valve job, new valve guides, & adjust the valves. The head gasket showed signs of leaking between the #1 & #2 cylinders. After talking to member Kurt Nolte over the phone I am wondering if I am wasting my money by having this machine shop work? I guess the worst I could loose is one head gasket & my time to R & R the head again. I noticed one recent post suggesting the valves in a diesel rarely need resurfacing. The Quantum has only 117,000 miles but the prior owner neglected the car badly. There were some metal like washers that came out of the injector holes holes. Do they need replacing? Does it matter which side of the washer faces the injector? I read in some prior posting that some kind of shield needs to be replaced on either the injectors or glow plugs. Is this correct & what do I need? I couldn't see anything that looks like a shield when removing the glow plugs & injectors. I plan to use the 12 mm ARC racing studs as I have them.

I would appreciate additional opinions ASAP so I can stop the machine shop work, if advisable. I don't want to be "penny wise & pound foolish" but don't want to waste money either.
