[Vwdiesel] Cold!

Great suggestion! No doubt that one drove you crazy.

I would argue that isn't happening in this case, because diesel fuel and
white smoke are in sufficient quantities during the start process.

I will tuck this one away, because I can see it happening.

BTW, I did a vacation years ago, where the alternator failed.
The dealer in Maine said it would take a week to get an alternator.
I hooked up a battery line to the solenoid, and just powered that, using
handsignals for my travels in northern Maine. (Where noone really cared.)
We traveled by day, and had a cabin with power at night. And I had a
charger in the trunk.

My wife was pregnant with our daughter that trip, so she never
did any pushing. For the most part we parked at the top of the lot
and rolled the car. Since I wasn't drawing power for much, the
starter could be used. A few times, I pushed, and she popped the clutch.
A few times, I just Fred Flintstone'd the car with my feet.

Later, i had someone on this list point out that I should have simply
pulled the solenoid, as then there would be no shutoff. Easy to slip
out the clutch in 4th to kill the engine (avoid doing in 5th, the
gear train is weaker.)

There are advantages of almost purely mechanical systems!
