Runaway is from crankcase oil being burned uncontrolled. Turning
off the ignition proves this to likely be your condition.
Causes:
Worn rings - too much blowby, pushing the oil out the breather and
into the intake.
Broken ring - same as worn rings or lets oil past the rings directly,
worn rings can do this also but it usually a blowby issue.
Dirty air filter - needs some other issues as well but it can contribute.
Clogged breather screen - It's between a spot welded in, plate and
the valve cover. Restriction causes high velocity blowby that
takes more oil particle than normal with it.
Just plain worn out - not necessarily your problem.
