Is he sure too that he didn't have too much oil in his last oil change?

There is an easy way to check to see if it is burning crankcase oil, there
should be lightish grey/blue smoke.

Sounds like crankcase oil though, mainly because its VERY hard for the
injection pump to cause a runaway even if the cutoff switch is busted.
