My 2 4000Q's outside both have 5 blade fans. The first two #'s are missing
off one, the remaining is --9 959 455. The other has no # left on it. 4000's
usually start with 85- for the part # from 85-87, hence the type 85 chassis
designation. 79-84 4000's are type 81's. That rubber piece is to drain the
fan of water. The reason they do it that way is to discourage water from
coming in through that hole, but still allow it to drain. Much like the MK1
raintray drains.
It definately sounds like a bad connection at the connector. Pull it off and
check it out. I'll bet you find either a bunch of corrosion or a loose
connection.
