  Freon doesn't break down into air.
  You can get a refill kit at parts stores, probably Wal-Mart and 
such, or yard sales.  I have a couple older ones but if it has the 
conversion fitting/adapter or is a factory R-134a system, you need 
the adapter/s to fit a refil or gauges onto it. 
  The VW's were notorious for getting pinholes in the evaporator.  I 
spent about $500 at a supposed good shop and even strongly 
suggested it was the evaporator.  I ended up pulling the fan, 
could see the oil soaked evaporator and put a total of about $150 
or less into a new evap, drier and o-rings.  Took about 2 hours.
Still has R-12 and I don't think I've recharged it and that was many 
years ago.
