The VW "amplified" antennae seem to be problematic. Either it loses the
power feed from the deck/antenna adapter (or the adapter was never powered
in the first place if you have an aftermarket deck), or the antenna base
gets corroded and loses it's ground, which seems to be common in salt-spray
areas.
Mine actually performs great - on FM anyway... probably the best car radio
reception I've had. AM is decent but nothing to rave about.
